Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing?
Today I stumbled across the phrase “Why is there something rather than nothing?” described as “a fundamental question of metaphysics.”
It was interesting to me since this question is something I grappled with a lot myself except with different wording.
Swedenborg says that the reason God created humankind is so he could impart His divine love to human beings in an angelic heaven.
Still, no matter how much certain views can resonate with us, we may still wonder: “Why did God create human beings to begin with?” In other words, “Why something rather than nothing?”
I realized that we cannot know the exact reason why because we cannot possess the mind of God.
This may seem unsatisfactory, but the reason why is because there is a part of us that fears human beings were created by accident, that maybe this all wasn’t meant to be. This is where views like simulation theory stem from, a lack of trust in God’s wisdom in creation.
If we doubt the creation of humanity (whether by God or another source) was a good idea, is it any wonder why people feel depressed with life? This actually has to do with faith or lack thereof.
So it is important to believe human beings were created from a place of benevolence and intelligence.
